아침 중앙일보 기사를 읽고 You Tube에 가서 조회수 1억 2,500만회를 돌파했다는 비디오는

찾을 수가 없어 성인용인 Unrated와 Tiffany Alvord가 노래부른 곡을 같이 옮겨왔다.

Tiffany의 목소리도 관능 적이다. 그런데 곡 자체는 PSY를 생각나게 한다.

 

섹시하고 유쾌하고 … 로빈 시크가 '대세'

지금 세계적으로 가장 뜨거운 노래는 로빈 시크(36)의 ‘블러드 라인스(Blurred Lines)’ 다. 8주 연속 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위, 앨범 발매 즉시 UK앨범 차트 1위, 64개국 아이튠즈 차트 1위 등 기록 행진을 이어가고 있다.

지난해 빌보드 싱글 차트 9주 연속 1위로 최장 기록을 세운 칼리 래 젭슨의 ‘콜 미 메이비’를 넘어설 기세다. 올 상반기 최대 히트곡임엔 분명하다. 무엇이 이 푸른 눈의 R&B 가수에게 빠져들게 했을까.

70년대풍 디스코 솔 … 중독성 있어

로빈 시크는 한국인에겐 다소 낯설지만 미국에선 프로듀서 겸 작곡가로 먼저 이름을 날렸다. 크리스티나 아길레라·어셔·제니퍼 허드슨 등에게 곡을 줬다. 2003년 1집 ‘뷰티풀 월드(Beautiful World)’로 늦깎이 데뷔한 그는 2005년 싱글 ‘로스트 위드아웃 유(Lost Without You)’로 빌보드 R&B차트 1위를 기록했다.

1988년 조지 마이클의 ‘원 모어 트라이(One More Try)’ 이후 백인 R&B 가수로선 처음으로 정상을 차지하며 ‘블루 아이드 솔(Blue eyed soul·흑인의 전유물이던 솔 장르를 부르는 백인 가수를 일컫는 말)’의 대표주자로 자리매김했다.

 

로빈 시크의 정규 6집은 8일 발표되는 빌보드 앨범 차트에서도 1위를 기록할 가능성이 크다. 후속곡으로 예정된 ‘기브 잇 투 유(Give It 2 U)’도 로빈 시크의 표현을 빌리자면 마이클 잭슨과 프린스를 연상시키는 매력적인 곡이다. [사진 유니버설뮤직]

‘블러드 라인’은 같은 이름의 정규 6집을 발표하기에 앞서 공개한 싱글이다. ‘70년대풍 디스코 솔’로 설명되는 이 곡에는 힙합 뮤지션 티아이(T.I.)와 퍼랠 윌리암스가 참여했다.

가사는 다소 불손하고 껄렁하다. 여자를 집요하게 유혹하면서 “I feel so lucky, you wanna hug me/What rhymes with hug me(난 운이 좋은 걸, 네가 날 안고 싶어하잖아/‘헉 미’에 맞는 라임이 뭐지?)”라 노래한다.

티아이의 랩 부분은 더 노골적으로 성(性)적이다. 그러나 로빈 시크 특유의 가성과 진성을 넘나드는 창법에 섹시한 목소리, 어깨를 들썩이게 하는 리듬과 중독성 있는 멜로디, 유쾌한 분위기의 곡은 귀에 찰싹 달라붙는다.

곡의 인기를 견인한 건 관능적인 뮤직비디오다. 에밀리 나타코브스키 등 반라의 8등신 미녀 모델 3명과 로빈 시크·티아이·퍼렐 윌리암스가 함께 출연한 작품으로 유튜브 뮤직비디오 조회수 1억 2500만회를 돌파했다. 2013 MTV 뮤직비디오 어워드 최다(3개) 부문 후보에도 올랐다. 성인용으로 제작된 ‘등급외’ 버전도 유튜브 조회수 700만여 회를 기록 중이다.

등급외 버전에선 모델들이 전라에 가까운 차림으로 능청스럽게 활보하고 춤을 춘다. 마네의 ‘풀밭 위의 식사’가 떠오르는 풍경이다.

로빈 시크는 여성팬을 몰고 다닌다. 그는 뉴욕 타임스와 인터뷰에서 “제 음악은 항상 여성친화적이었어요. 만약 아내가 싫어한다면 고려하지도 않죠”라 밝혔다. 영화 ‘미션 임파서블4’의 출연 배우로 유명한 아내 폴라 패튼에게 미리 허락을 받고 촬영에 임하는 등 현실에선 조신하게 행동한다. 허나 늑대의 본능을 환상적으로 구현한 뮤직비디오로 남성 팬까지 대거 끌어들인 듯하다.

여성 감독 다이앤 마텔이 연출한 뮤직비디오는 재미있고 스타일리시하다는 찬사와 성차별적이라는 비난을 동시에 받으며 화제작이 됐다. 미국 시애틀의 미소년 풍자극단 ‘모드 캐러셀’이 “남성을 대상화시키는 것도 아무런 문제가 없다는 걸 보여주겠다”며 남녀를 바꿔 패러디한 뮤직비디오가 공개 20일 만에 조회수 250만회를 넘어서기도 했다. 로빈 시크는 한동안 ‘현상’이라 불릴 듯하다.
