세기의 재즈 거장 [Louis Armstrong(루이 암스트롱)]은
재즈의 성지라 불리는 뉴올리언즈에서 가난한 빈민의 아들로 태어나
재즈계의 거목으로 자리하기까지 그의 인생은 파란만장 그 자체였다. 11살에
학교를 그만두고 불량 써클에 가입하여 사기와 폭력에 물들어 있던 소년 [Louis]는
1912년 술에 취해 사람들이 모인 장소에서 폭죽대신 총을 쐈다는 혐의로 소년원에 들어
간다. 그러나 그게 전화위복이 되어 그는 본격적으로 음악을 접할 수 있게 된다. 1914년
소년원을 나와 시카고로 이주하여 여러 바를 전전하며 무명악사로 돌아다니다 1918년
[King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band(킹 올리버 크레올 재즈 밴드)]의 보조 밴드인
[Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band(키드 오리 크레올 재즈 밴드)]에서 프로뮤지션
으로서의 첫 발을 내딛게 된다. 1년 후 시카고에 진출하여 백인들을 위한
음악을 연주한 [Fate Marable(페이트 매러블)] 밴드에서
3년간 [Cornet(코넷)] 주자로 내공을 다진다.
