노르웨이 산간 마을에 가난한 과부 오제와 그의 외아들 농부 페르귄트
그리고 아름다운 소녀 솔베이지가 살고 있었다.
페르귄트와 솔베이지 둘은 사랑했고 결혼을 약속한다.
가난한 농부였던 페르귄트는 돈을 벌기 위해 외국으로 떠난다. 
숱한 고생끝에 돈을모아 10여년만에 고국으로 돌아오는데

국경근처에서 그만 산적을 만나 돈을 다 빼앗긴다
  

간신히 살아남은 페르귄트는 빈털털이가 된 모습으론 차마 꿈에 그리던 솔베이지를

만날수가 없어 다시 돈을벌러 이국땅으로 떠난다

하지만 돈을 벌지 못하고 평생을 걸인처럼 살다

결국 늙고 병든 초라한 모습으로 다시 고향으로 돌아오지만
어머니가 살던 오두막에 도착해 문을 여니 어머니는 이미 세상을 뜬지 오래고
대신 사랑하는 연인 솔베이지가 백발이된 모습으로 그곳에서  페르귄트를 맞는다.
 

병들고 지친 페르귄트는 그날밤
백발이 되도록 자신만을 기다려준 여인 솔베이지가 자장가처럼 불러주는 노래를

그녀의 품에서 들으며 조용히 죽음을 맞이한다...
꿈에도 그리던 연인 페르귄트를 안고 솔베이지 그녀 역시 곧 페르귄트를 따라간다..

 

노르웨이 작곡가 그리그의 '페르귄트 모음곡' 중에 삽입된 것으로
가슴이 시리도록 아름답고 애절한 서정적인 곡입니다.......

Marita Solberg (Marita Kvarving Sølberg) (March 22, 1976) is a Norwegian soprano.

Solberg was recognised in the role of "Solveig" in Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt. In June 2006, this performance was transmitted live on German radio and television. Solberg has worked with orchestras and at festivals in Europe and in the United States of America.

This is a close (although not word-for-word literal) translation:

and summer days fade, and the year expire,
