People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no on-e dare
Disturb the sound of silence.
'Fools,' said I, 'you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.'
'Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.'
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed in the wells of silence.
nd the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, 'The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls,
And whisper'd in the sound of silence.

적나라한 불빛 속에서 난 보았어.
만 명, 어쩌면 더 많은
사람들을.
그 사람들은 말하지 않고 이야기하고,
귀기울이지 않고 듣고,
말로 해도 공감할 수 없는 노래를 쓰고
있었어.
그리고 아무도 감히 그 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨리지 못했지.
"바보들" 내가 말했어. "당신들은 침묵을 몰라요.
그건
마치 암이 퍼지는 것과 같죠.
내 말을 들어봐요. 내가 알려 줄께요.
내 손을 잡아 봐요. 내가 다가 갈께요."
하지만 나의
얘기는 소리없이 내리는 빗방울처럼
침묵의 샘안에 떨어져 메아리 쳤어.
사람들은 절하고 기도했어.
자신이 만든 네온
신에게
그리고 경고의 메시지가 빛났어.
그 네온이 만들어 내는 문구에
이렇게 쓰여 있었지. "예언자의 말씀은 지하철 벽에 적혀
있다
그리고 집안의 벽에"
그리고 침묵의 소리 속에 속삭였지.
