차분하고 지적인 포크 싱어 송라이터, Suzanne Vega 1960년 7월 11일 캘리포니아 산타 모니카(Santa Monica)에서 출생한 수잔 베가(Suzanne Vega)는 2살에 뉴욕(New York City)으로 이사해 그곳에서 자랐다. 고교 시절 연극, 연기, 음악 교육을 받아 재능을 양성했고, 바나드 대학(Barnard College)에 진학, 학업과 병행해 예술가들이 많이 사는그리니치 빌리지(Greenwich Village)의포크(folk) 클럽에서 영역을 넓혀갔고 송라이터들을 주로 다루는 잡지 <쿱(The CooP)>를 통해 수 차례 소개되어 주목받게 되었다.
1984년 A&M과 계약한 그녀는 이듬 해 데뷔 앨범 [Suzanne Vega]를 발표, 평론가들에게 극찬을 받으며 성공으로 데뷔,1987년 발표된 2집 앨범 [Solitude Standing]은 그녀를 전 세계적으로 알린 대 히트 곡 'Luka'를 담고 있었다. 아동 학대를 다룬 이 곡은 그 가사에 있어서도 큰 화제를 낳았고, 골드 디스크로 인증받는다. 창작 활동에만 전념하던 그녀는 그로부터 3년 후인 1990년 3집 앨범 [Days Of Open Hand]를 발표했지만 지나치게 음악성에만 치중한 나머지 대중적으로는 큰 반응을 얻어내기 힘든 정도였다.
하지만 몇 달 뒤 영국 출신의 클럽 DJ들인 D.N.A.가 그녀의 전작 앨범에 수록되어 있던 아 카펠라 곡 'Tom's Diner'를 편곡해 히트시키면서 그녀는 새삼 주목받게 되었다. 1992년의 [99.9?F] 앨범은 그녀가 클럽 테크노 비트에 큰 관심을 가지게 되었음을 미뤄 짐작케 하는 획기적인 변신과 실험 정신에 투철한 작품집이었다. 1996년 5집 앨범 [Nine Objects Of Desire]가 발매되었고 그 후로 베스트 앨범 및 라이브 앨범이 더러 출시되었다. 평소 대중적 히트나 명성에는 별 연연하지 않는 모습이고 앨범 작업도 천천히 그리고 충실하게 진행하는 편이지만 지금도 그녀는 어디에선가 작업 중일 것이다. - 오이뮤직 -
